Geocaching
Time to fulfill that childhood dream and find a treasure! Geocaching is just that: it uses a handheld GPS to locate the prize. Consider it the high tech version of the old-fashioned treasure hunt.
Geocaching is an outdoor activity growing in popularity as more people do geotouring - tourism that involves the physical, cultural and historical aspects of a place. Geocachers start with a box filled with trinkets plus a logbook and hide it somewhere. They then post the longitudes and latitudes on the web. Your part is to find it using the GPS.
Geocaching is a great physical activity for everyone and can be done year-round! It provides a wonderful opportunity to explore the city or to rediscover it from a different angle. This activity promotes the local history, wildlife and a healthy lifestyle. Currently, Yorkton has six official geocaches located in and around town.
If you don't have a GPS unit, you can borrow one from Tourism Yorkton by coming to the office during regular business hours. Please call ahead to make sure a unit is available.
Caches can be as small as film canisters and as large as ice cream pails. The caches may be hidden in the trees but are never buried. Leave something behind for every item you take, such as small toys, key chains, pens. No candy, food, alcohol or tobacco as these are perishables and this is a family activity.
For more geocaches in your area visit Geocaching.com and enter your postal code.
If you set up your own cache, please inform Tourism Yorkton (if the cache is around Yorkton) or go to the SaskCachers website to post your new cache.
